What is learning analytics?

Don't know about you, but in my world, recently the term Learning Analytics seems to be on the rise.  Could this be because of the large increase in online learning???  Is this a new term?  What does it mean?

Analyzing how individuals learn is not new. Doing so allows educators to be more effective in the long run.  To improve the learning process, analyze what and how students learn.

Still confused, basically learning analytics is a fancy terminology given to the process of using a tool to evaluate what students learn and then reflecting on why they did or did not learn or demonstrate mastery of the content.  An example of a traditional form of learning analytics would be for an educator to give an exam.  If students didn't succeed on the exam or show mastery of the new content knowledge, the educator should determine the areas of need from students, review the teaching instruction practices that were used, and modify and change any instructional strategies before reteaching the content to students.

Still not entirely certain?  Watch this...
