Software and hardware requirements are dependent upon the type of learning analytics. For online courses using learning management systems (LMS) the software is built into the system. However, the capabilities of the analytics within the LMS varies. At the basic levels, instructors can gather reports to see time on task in a defined space and other such items that are at more of surface level. The deeper you delve and the more specific and detailed analytics you want, the complexity and the price increase.
Issues that occur with learning analytics are related to cost. The more intense analytics that can really lead to a personalized learning experience for students is still in early stages and the cost is a determent for now.
